LAREDO, Texas — U.S. Border Patrol agents at the Laredo North immigration checkpoint on Interstate 35 intercepted an illegal immigrant from Mexico who attempted to pass through using fraudulent identification documents during a late-night Greyhound bus inspection.
Agents detected inconsistencies in the documents during the inspection, determined the individual was illegally present in the United States, and took the subject into custody. Both the fraudulent documents and a cell phone were seized for further examination. Federal charges are pending.
“The American public can be confident that agents are vigilant, agile, and prepared to meet tomorrow’s threats today,” U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a statement announcing the arrest.
The agency described synthetic identity fraud and document forgery as a growing challenge “fueled by rapid technological advancements,” and said agents leveraged advanced technology and specialized training to identify the fraudulent documents. CBP framed the arrest as part of a broader proactive enforcement posture aimed at containing isolated incidents before they develop into wider security threats.
“Under the guidance of President Trump and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin, the U.S. Border Patrol is setting new standards in operational effectiveness, adapting quickly to emerging challenges and maintaining the integrity of the nation’s borders,” the agency said.
The Laredo North checkpoint on Interstate 35 is one of the busiest inland immigration checkpoints in the country, sitting roughly 30 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. Federal prosecutors have not yet announced a timeline for charges in the case.
